I've been looking beyond my usual cup of tea in the mornings lately, instead blending up some cool and nourishing tonics to help combat the heat. A new favorite has emerged from the spice cabinet in the form of my Chocolate & Turmeric Elixir.
I know turmeric might seem a bit exotic so early in the day, but in combination with a little organic cacao powder (raw, if you wish), coconut milk and raw honey, it provides a gently sweet, indulgently creamy lift to your morning. I like to mix mine up the night before and keep it in the fridge in a little half-pint jar. In the morning, just shake it until it froths, then sip away.
- 1 tsp dried organic turmeric powder
- 1-2 tsp. organic cacao powder
- 1-2 tsp. raw honey
- 1/2 cup organic coconut milk
- 1/2 cup water
Turmeric is enjoying a lot of flattering attention lately for its health benefits. The root itself, as well as its chief active component curcumin have been the subject of many recent studies and it's been found to be a potent anti-inflammatory with wide-ranging benefits. To see more about some recent studies about turmeric, you may want to take a peek at this article by Dr. Andrew Weil. Given turmerics potentially nourishing effects, we've been trying to find more ways to incorporate this gorgeously golden spice into our repertoire. We love Tumeric Alive, of course, but we've always been do-it-yourself-ers, so we make a version inspired by their delicious drink at home, and this past week I played around on my own with some fresh turmeric root from the Dual Specialty Store in a Southeast Asian-style curry with romano beans and Thai eggplants from the farmers' market. I think a tea blend featuring the root and perhaps a hot cocoa mix won't be too far off in the shop for the colder months, keep an eye out for them once the weather begins to turn. In the meantime, enjoy this frothy treat! And, do leave me a note: how do you use turmeric?
